Truth Speaks – a poem about being a Facilitator

Lesley-Anne, Facilitator for South Tyneside Poverty Truth Commission.

One of the wonderful things about the Poverty Truth approach is the creativity that naturally becomes part of the journey. Again and again, we’re struck by the powerful and thoughtful ways Commissioners express what they’ve seen, felt and learned. That’s why we’re shining a spotlight on the creative work of Commissioners across the UK.

Lesley-Anne (pictured) from South Tyneside Poverty Truth Commission, has written this beautiful poem about her role as a Facilitator for the Commission…

Truth Speaks

I met truth the other day.

It was a fair morning when I sat beside her.

Nervously, we both sought a place of safety

I offered her my ear, she offered me her life story.

Truth told me about the shame and sadness

of a life with little money. An invisible life that was

recognised as a statistic, a number, a tick box.

Listening became quite easy, but what could I say?

Truth had hope for a future

where people were equal and listened to,

that the choice between heating and eating

were non – existent.

“I am a creative but I don’t paint pictures” truth said wistfully,

“I am creative in my day to day living.

May be one day I would like to create a masterpiece… but

today” truth told me, “I create a life

for my children through hard choices

with hope and perseverance.”

“Perhaps” I said, “your wisdom is the masterpiece.”
