A Gathering to Remember

During Challenge Poverty Week, we had the privilege of gathering as commissioners for a few remarkable days – a time marked by laughter, tears, and profound wisdom. It’s hard not to feel a deep sense of gratitude for the companionship, creativity, and hard work each person poured into this gathering.

Lots of laughter during our PTN Gathering activities.

Every moment seemed to hold together, weaving into a collective experience of shared purpose. The sessions were more than just talks; they were spaces of genuine listening, spaces where stories found resonance and strength. We were not just hearing about poverty but hearing from those who have lived it, learned from it, and now stand as advocates for change. Every conversation and every story shared, built up the momentum of what we aimed to achieve together.

Community Commissioner Diane shared her experience

“Attending the PTC conference was previously so far out of my comfort zone that I wouldn’t have even considered going. Although nervous and unsure when we first arrived, it didn’t take long to start feeling more relaxed and mixing with other people from different commissions around the country. I went to The Gathering feeling a bit defeated and not sure we could actually make a difference.
“I left The Gathering with renewed hope and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with a bit of guidance on the way forward. I feel I changed as a person during the conference with my confidence going from strength to strength and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the PTC journey takes us!”

Commissioners had opportunities to share their experiences and ideas in small groups and with the whole gathering.

As we witnessed these powerful connections form, it was clear that this gathering was about more than just ideas. It was about a shared journey, a commitment to listen, understand, and support each other.

Impactful words and insight during our ‘washing line’ themed activities.

This gathering reminded us that true change is relational. We are not simply a network of individuals but a united front working to transform the realities of poverty in the UK. Each commissioner brought something unique, whether personal stories, insights, and hopes, that enriched the experience and strengthened our bond.

Community Commissioner Yssy shared her reflection

“My time at the PTC Network Conference started with apprehension or anxiety. How many people would be there? Would I know anyone there? What are we going to be doing? Am I going to make a fool of myself? What is the food going to be like? Am I going to fall over? Will I lose my stuff or miss the train, get stuck in a tube door or miss the whole trip? Will I struggle to understand anything that is going on or being said? What if I say the wrong thing? What if I can’t answer any of the questions? What if I slip and fall in front of everyone?
“Well, I can report back (having NOT slipped on my butt) that not only did these questions get dispelled when I walked into the conference room, but I laughed, cried, contributed, cat walked, wrote on a sock and made some friends. I didn’t know it, but I felt stagnant with my ideas and energy. I didn’t know that these few days spent with the PTCN and all the poignant interactions, is exactly what I needed and exactly what I needed to bring back to the East Surrey PTC.”

Commissions were challenged to convey their message on a t-shirt design. We thoroughly enjoyed the fashion show at the end of the activity with some top models.

A unique, and bond-forming gathering.

Thank you to everyone that attended and contributed their experiences, wisdom and insights for us all to share and take forward into our work and lives.
