A royal invitation for Sara

We’re proud as punch to share that Sara, a Community Commissioner from the former Peterborough Poverty Truth Commission (PTC), was invited to attend this year’s Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to supporting people in her community.

Alongside her involvement in the Peterborough PTC, Sara has continued to play an important role across the wider Poverty Truth Network — contributing to a number of our national group projects, where she generously shares her insight, experiences and encouragement with others.

Sara is also a passionate community champion, supporting people facing homelessness through her work with St John’s Church and across Peterborough more widely. We are incredibly proud to share this reflection from a very special day, one that recognised the compassion, dignity and advocacy she brings to the lives of so many people.

On Wednesday 6th May 2026, I had the great honour of attending the magnificent Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It was an unforgettable afternoon filled with tradition, celebration and gratitude.

From the moment I entered the palace gardens, the atmosphere was extraordinary. The beautifully maintained grounds, the music and the elegance of the occasion created a truly special experience. Guests from all backgrounds gathered together in a setting rich with history and heritage, making the day feel both inspiring and humbling.

The most memorable moment of the day was being selected to speak with Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, about my work with the Peterborough Poverty Truth Commission and my involvement in supporting the homeless community through St John’s Church and across Peterborough more widely.

It was a privilege to share the experiences, challenges and importance of this work with Her Royal Highness. Our conversation highlighted the value of compassion, dignity and community support for those facing hardship and homelessness. To have that work recognised and listened to at such an occasion was deeply meaningful and something I will always carry with pride.

As I reflected on the day, walking through the palace gardens, I felt incredibly grateful. Not only for the invitation itself, but for the opportunity to represent the people and communities at the heart of this work. The Royal Garden Party was far more than a ceremonial occasion; it was a reminder that acts of service, kindness, and advocacy truly matter.

It is a day and a conversation I will never forget.
