South Lakes PTC: Poverty awareness training

South Lakes Poverty Truth Commissioners delivering poverty awareness training to the Active Cumbria team.

For South Lakes Poverty Truth Commission, poverty awareness training has become a powerful way of carrying the Commission’s learning into new spaces, raising awareness of the realities of poverty and deepening understanding across organisations.

In February, the Commission delivered a session with Active Cumbria, which is leading work across the region to support people to be active, with a particular focus on tackling inequalities in participation in sport and physical activity.

Community Commissioners Sarah, Caroline, Steve and Jim delivered the session, creating space for honest conversation, reflection and shared learning. There was lots of great engagement throughout, with lots of curiosity and interest from the Active Cumbria team.

One attendee reflected on the session, saying: “I thought the session was brilliant. I loved the combination of presenters and activities. I have already had feedback from colleagues about how good it was to hear from real people with their real stories.”

This is the fifth training session the Commissioners have co-produced and delivered. With previous sessions being delivered for council staff, councillors and a local GP practice. The Commission would welcome opportunities to deliver further sessions and continue these important conversations.
